Traffic to Gay Sex Site Spikes After Controversy

I squealed with delight when it was revealed earlier this month that one of the leaders of the ex-gay movement, George Rekers, had purchased the services of young gay escort Jo-Vanni Roman via the website Rentboy.com to accompany him on a European vacation.  The story has played out like a Hollywood script and might even play a spoiling role in Florida’s governor’s race.  If you haven’t read L.Z. Granderson’s commentary on the story, it’s definitely worth your time.

Rekers’ career is rightfully ruined, Roman has received a crapload of unwanted attention, and Florida’s leading GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill McCollum, who convinced the state to pay Rekers $120,000 for “expert” testimony to defend the state’s ban on gay adoption, has likely seen his campaign derailed by the scandal.  So, with so many lives thrown into upheaval, who stands to benefit from this whole scenario?  You guessed it: Rentboy.com.

According to website analytics from Alexa.com, traffic to Rentboy.com has spiked 180% over the last month.  The website has been visited by over .02% of the internet population in the last two weeks, up from a three month average hovering near .001% (see the graph below).  Take it from someone who has spent a lot of money trying to drive website traffic- you can’t buy that kind of publicity!

The results are similar to what gay dating (read: hook-up) website Mancrunch.com experienced after its commercial was controversially snubbed by CBS from its Super Bowl broadcast.  The percentage of visitors to that website skyrocketed from .0006% to .013% in the days following the commercial’s rejection.  This lead many people (including myself) to question whether or not Mancrunch really ever intended to air the ad.  Whatever the website’s marketers’ intentions were, it worked- they made out like bandits!  Yes, it seems there’s nothing like a scandal to bring an obscure website into national prominence.

On a completely unrelated note, I have an announcement to make.  You heard it here first:  I am pregnant with Taylor Lautner’s gaybie.  I can deny the rumors no longer.  All press inquiries should be directed to OpenlyGayMarketing.wordpress.com.
